Experience:
A. Knee and Shoulder experience.

I have had a substantial amount of knee arthroscopic and arthroplasty surgery.
• I have completed a one-year clinical Fellowship (Jan-Dec 1997, Adelaide, Australia) in
a busy orthopaedic center in knee arthroscopic and arthroplasty surgery. This center and
the fellowship were accredited by the Australian Orthopaedic Association and were
recognized for training. During this full-time paid fellowship, I performed and assisted a
generous amount of knee arthroscopies and arthroplasties. I was also exposed to open
shoulder surgery.
• During my 3rd year (1999) of SPR training I had an opportunity to work in a Knee
Arthroscopy unit where I performed and assisted knee arthroscopies which included
meniscal excisions and anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions.
• During 2001, I worked in a shoulder unit and assisted and performed open shoulder surgery
which included cuff repairs and shoulder arthroplasty.
• Since January 2004, I am working in the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham (Interdeanery
transfer ) in the Shoulder and Knee unit. I am now able to consolidate my Knee and
Shoulder experience. I have performed and assisted a number of knee and shoulder
arthroscopic and arthroplasty procedures. I am now getting more experienced in this highly
skilled orthopaedic subspecialty and hope to be ready to take up a Consultant post in the
latter part of 2004.
• I have completed shoulder and knee courses in the UK and Austria early this year and am
planning to visit specialist knee and shoulder centers in Germany and the UK to learn and
keep up-to-date with this rapidly advancing specialty.

B. General operative experience
Throughout my orthopaedic training, I have been exposed to a wide range of trauma and elective
surgery and I am competent in performing procedures such as:
• Manipulative reduction of paediatric and adult fractures
• Application of external fixation and management of open fractures
• Internal fixation of common and some complex intra-articular fractures
• Hip hemi-arthroplasty and Dynamic Hip screw for femoral neck fractures
• Hip and Knee Arthroplasty

C. General clinical experience
I have been actively involved in general as well as specialised clinics (paediatric, upper limb, spine,
pelvic and hip clinics). I am directly responsible for the routine and emergency management of preoperative
and post-operative patients in a variety of orthopaedic and trauma conditions.

D. Teaching Experience
I regularly present at Journal Clubs, Audit and Orthopaedic meetings.
I also enjoy sharing my knowledge with my colleagues in both formal and informal teaching
environments. I have held teaching sessions for
1) MRCS course – Orthopaedic module in North Manchester General Hospital in Sept 2003.
2) Undergraduate students as part of their core teaching
3) Physiotherapists and Occupational therapy students during their Orthopaedic term in
St. James`s Hospital, Dublin.
3) SHO`s and Junior Registrars.
4) Power point presentations in Waterford Regional Hospital, which was catered for the
Interns, SHO`s, Registrars and Consultants.

E. Management Experience
My managerial skills have increased and the skills relevant to the study of medicine include
leadership, working with not above or against, cooperation, and reacting calmly in stressful situations.
This extra responsibility in my most recent posts included
1) SHO and Registrar rota’s
2) Research coordination and acting as a link between the Junior doctors and the Consultant
researchers
3) Organised undergraduate competitive Orthopaedic exams in Dublin.
I have completed a couple of management courses and intend to do the Consultant teachers training
course and Equal Opportunities course in the near future.
